Annual LiteracyCares
Award of Excellence Gala-This program works to recognize the exceptional
contribution of literacy volunteers by presenting a special event in their honor
and

presenting
an annual award to recognize their work. Our young MentorCares participants learn
how to run an awards program, plan, market and execute a special event
and actually run the gala. Participants act as committee chairs, master of ceremonies,
honoree escorts all as a way of practicing and mastering their learned leadership
and life skills. The annual award is presented to the literacy volunteers
that have shown exceptional effort in the area of literacy tutoring and training.

LiteracyCares Adopt an Elementary School Reading
Program
Students
annually adopt a local elementary school and conduct tutoring
sessions with Kindergarteners, 1st and 2nd graders on Saturday mornings throughout
the school year. The tutoring sessions consist of having the elementary
students along with their parents move from station to station learning different
aspects of reading. This includes guided reading, learning long and short vowel
sounds, matching opposites, playing words games, working with phonics tiles, using
sight word flash cards and many other literacy related activities. Stations are
manned by MentorCares high school students that have received training from the
Elementary School Reading Specialists in how to conduct the reading and tutoring
sessions.
