MentorCares Students Raise Awareness and Money for Haiti

JUNE 1ST 2010 HYATTSVILLE, MARYLAND High School Leaders in the MentorCares program at Northwestern High School created the "Shine the Light of Hope on Haiti Project" in an effort to raise money and awareness about the needs Haiti and her people.

The student leaders hosted a special Shine the Light of Hope Event on Friday evening May 21st, 2010 at Northwestern High School 7000 Adelphi Road Hyattsville MD 20782. The large crowd of supporters were treated to great Haitian food and music. Ms. Tonaine Kersaint and Pastor Arbentz Pierre Antoine longtime local area Haitian community activists spoke at the event and thanked the students for keeping the spotlight focused on Haiti. The event was co-hosted by MentorCares Students Ingrid Turcios and Shane James.

As darkness fell everyone in attendance lit their flashlights as a show of support for the Haitian people. The new flashlights and batteries were then packed and prepared for shipment to Haiti.

During the project students collected over 1,200 brand new flashlights and batteries along with over $1,100 in monetary contributions which will be sent to Haiti.

Generous contributors to the project included Rosa Parks Elementary School, Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowship Inc. and a number of long time LeadershipCares supporters.

MentorCares students will also continue to make "Shine the Light of Hope Presentations" at local high schools, middle schools, elementary schools and media outlets to keep the spotlight on the short and long term needs of the Haitian people.
